7th Grade Civics
Syllabus
Welcome to seventh grade civics! I look forward to a great school year ahead filled with exciting learning opportunities. This letter is to provide both the student and parent with some general information about how to succeed in this social studies course. I will be posting curriculum updates and information about the class on this site.
In this course, students will examine topics, make informed judgments, and apply problem solving skills to address historical, geographical, political, economic, and cultural issues related to civics in the United States and the global arena. Students will utilize historical inquiry to identify and solve problems, work cooperatively to achieve common goals, make connections between historical concepts and current events, connect history and the modern world using computers and other technology, and make historical connections through the research and writing process.
This course covers Functions and Organizations of Government, Origins of the American Political System, Roles, Rights and Responsibilities of U.S. Citizens, and Methods of Active Participation in our Political System. The Civics course will culminate in an End of Course Exam (EOC). The student’s final grade in the class will be composed of their 4 nine weeks grades consisting of 70% of their finale grade for the year and their EOC score consisting of 30% of their final grade for the year. Students will receive practice and review for this exam throughout the 2017-2018 school year. The exam will be computer based and administered May 2018. It is imperative that parents/guardians have a discussion with their student(s) concerning the importance of this exam. This year Bay District will be conducting cumulative computer based Progress Monitoring Civics Exam at the end of every grading quarter. These exams will count as a test grade in your student’s class
Summative Assessment Grading Policy:
Assessments will be used to guide instruction and provide students with feedback. These assessments are ongoing and given throughout the learning process.
